In the design of fire suppression andevacuation systems, the connection elements ofthe equipment are playing anincreasingly important rolethat should not be overlooked. Malfunctions and false alarms are very common in these systems, often caused by improperly installed cables, which are frequently regarded as mere accessories that do not warrant adequate attention. Today, with new technologies, cables have alsobecome a fundamental component for signal transmission, which is no longer a simple on/off function. To prevent malfunctions, cable manufacturing standards have beenupdated several times in recent years, improving the products’ construction characteristics and incorporating new materials to comply with thecurrent CPR regulations in force.
In this regard, in KTS we emphasize that the fundamental construction standard for these cables is CEI 20-105 V2, which specifies two different construction types. The differences lie in the technology used for the conductor insulation: one version is constructed withglass/micatapeon the copper conductor and XLPE outer insulation, while the other version featuressilicone insulationapplied directly to the conductor.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS OF KTS FIRE-RESISTANT CABLES
“We chose to manufacture the cables using the version with glass/mica tape andXLPE compound insulation. This choice ensures compliance with two fundamental characteristics for these products: the first is the cable’s resistance to flame in fire conditions; the glass/mica tape on the conductor creates a clear barrier, extending the fire resistance performanceup to 120 minutes.
“The second characteristic is the use of XLPE compound, which, compared to silicone (another construction type specified in the standard), provides the conductors with greater capacity, ensuringexcellent signal transmission and thus preventing malfunctions and/or false alarms.”
FIRE DETECTION CABLE RANGE (loop)
The KTS product line for fire detection (loop) bears the designationFTH, which corresponds tothe designation FTE29OHM16 as specified in the CEI 20-105 v2 standard. The cable’s construction features are as follows: Conductor insulation with mica-glass tape and XLPE compounds, aluminum/polyester tape for shielding, and aredouter jacket made of halogen-free (LSZH) thermoplastic compound, M16-rated.
The KTS range is very extensive. Specifically, bothtwo-conductorandfour-conductorcablelines have been developed, with cross-sections ranging from 0.50 to 2.50, all CPR Cca certified and PH120 fire-resistant.
